The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The award-winning features print design team at The New York Times is responsible for the majority of the paper's weekly sections, including Arts & Leisure, Sunday Business, Styles, Book Review and Food. We are looking for an art director to join our team in the NYC office.

You are familiar with digital presentation, considering the mobile experience when assigning illustration and animation. Ultimately, you are a team player, able to bring your enthusiasm to projects big and small.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City, and includes regular attendance in the office up to four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities :

  • Partner with a desk's editors and photo editors and act as both a creative lead and a project manager, designing covers, interior pages and special projects.
  • Conceptualize creative solutions and see them through to publication.
  • Commission illustration effectively for all platforms
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Design Director, Print Features

Basic Qualifications :

  • 5+ years of design experience
  • A portfolio that demonstrates superior typography and layout skills, whether through magazine work, innovative newspaper design or book design
  • Knowledge of Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience selling ideas and building consensus
  • Excellent collaboration skills for working with fellow designers, editors, photo editors and other staff
  • Experience managing projects and meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated talent with illustration, with a passion for growing a network of diverse artists
  • Comfortable working under pressure and adapting to changing priorities
  • Familiarity with digital art direction
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail
