We are seeking an analytical, detail-oriented  Cost Accountant  to join our Finance team in Chicago. In this role, you will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, and optimizing the direct and indirect costs associated with our products, packaging, pharmacy fulfillment partners, and logistics networks.

You will own inventory accounting, standard cost modeling, variance analysis, and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) reporting. By collaborating closely with Operations, Supply Chain, and Pharmacy Operations teams, you will deliver actionable insights that directly impact our unit economics and profit margins.

Responsibilities

Cost Analysis & COGS Management

Develop, maintain, and update standard cost models for all products.

Perform monthly Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) reconciliations, analyzing variances between standard costs and actual expenditures (material price variance, yield variance, labor/overhead absorption).

Track and analyze freight, fulfillment, and last-mile shipping expenses across multiple fulfillment and compounding pharmacy partners.

Inventory Accounting & Valuation

Oversee month-end inventory accounting, including raw materials, packaging, finished goods, and inventory-in-transit across partner facilities and warehouses.

Prepare monthly inventory reconciliations, reserve analyses (excess, obsolete, or expired product), and journal entries.

Partner with Operations and pharmacies to standardize, monitor, and audit physical inventory counts and cycle count processes.

Financial Reporting & Month-End Close

Support the monthly financial close process by preparing accurate cost accounting journal entries, reconciliations, and schedules.

Prepare margin analysis reports by product line, subscription plan, and fulfillment route to support executive leadership decision-making.

Assist in establishing internal controls over inventory and cost reporting in compliance with US GAAP.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Strategy

Partner with Supply Chain and Procurement teams to evaluate supplier contracts, land-cost calculations, and volume discount structures.

Collaborate with Operations team to ensure pharmacy software system order flows accurately integrate into accounting ERP system.

Participate in budgeting and forecasting cycles by providing data-driven inputs for future product costs, shipping rates, and packaging expenses.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related business field.

Experience: 3–5+ years of cost accounting, inventory management, or corporate accounting experience, ideally in e-commerce, CPG, pharmaceuticals, or regulated manufacturing/fulfillment.

Accounting Standards: Strong knowledge of US GAAP related to inventory valuation, COGS, and cost allocation methodologies.

Technical Proficiency: Advanced MS Excel skills (pivot tables, complex formulas, financial modeling). Experience working with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and e-commerce platforms.

Analytical Mindset: Excellent quantitative skills with the ability to turn complex operational data into concise financial stories.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or CPA designation (or candidate).

Experience with pharmaceutical, compounding, or direct-to-consumer (DTC) shipping models.

Familiarity with SQL, Looker, Tableau, or Power BI for querying operational and financial databases.
