Engagement Fellow

Boston University Hillel

Role Overview

The Engagement Fellow is a central builder of Jewish student life at Boston University Hillel, helping students find connection, meaning, and community through relationships, Shabbat and holiday experiences, and creative programming. This role is ideal for someone who feels genuinely excited about BU Hillel’s mission and eager to bring that energy to students every day.

This is a highly relational, student-facing role. The Fellow serves as a consistent and welcoming presence in students’ lives, creating spaces that are uplifting, inclusive, and rooted in genuine care. Through one-on-one connections and group experiences, the Fellow empowers students to explore their Jewish identity and build community on their own terms. As part of a cohort of early-career professionals, the Jewish Life Fellow will receive mentorship and training while contributing to a dynamic Jewish campus community of over 4,000 students.

What You’ll Do

  • Build one-on-one relationships with students through consistent outreach and presence on campus
  • Create a welcoming environment where students feel seen, valued, and connected
  • Empower students to take ownership of their Jewish identity, leadership, and community
  • Support planning and execution of Shabbat and holiday programming, including logistics, outreach, and atmosphere
  • Work with student leaders to enhance participation, ownership, and energy around Shabbat and holidays

On a day to day basis you will

  • Design and implement engaging programs that connect students to Jewish life in relevant and accessible ways
  • Build community through creative and immersive experiences such as meals, retreats, workshops, speakers, and cultural events
  • Help cultivate micro-communities based on shared interests, identities, and relationships
  • Collaborate with staff and student leaders to ensure thoughtful, high-quality student experiences

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 0–2 years of professional experience, or relevant internships or fellowships
  • Demonstrated interest in Jewish life, community building, or working with college students
  • Experience in a relational, people-facing setting — whether through campus involvement, youth work, hospitality, education, or something else entirely

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Warm, relational communication style with the ability to connect across diverse backgrounds and identities
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple relationships and responsibilities at once
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative staff team
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, including Shabbat and Jewish holidays
  • Excitement about BU Hillel’s mission and a genuine love of Jewish life, Shabbat, and Jewish holidays
  • Creativity, initiative, and a good sense of humor
  • Strong written and verbal skills, effective at communicating with a variety of stakeholders including students, parents, alumnae/i, and university partners.

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the nonprofit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $46,000 - $48,000
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, Life, AD&D and Long Term Disability (LTD) insurances, Flexible Spending accounts, generous vacation/sick time, and parental leave. Great professional development, mentoring, and skill building opportunities
  • A network of colleagues and peers across the Hillel movement
