About this role
Who we are:
Field Nation brings companies and service professionals together through an integrated, easy-to-use platform. We support businesses looking to grow their service offerings while also empowering technicians to leverage their skills on their own terms. Our mission is to help the service delivery industry do great work, and we live that mission by doing great work for the companies and service professionals that depend on us.
Why is this role important to Field Nation?
Field Nation is looking for a high-caliber Staff Software Engineer to guide our technical North Star for our engineering organization. This role balances individual delivery with broader responsibilities designed to be a "force multiplier"—elevating our collective technical excellence and mentoring senior talent.
As an AI-forward engineer, you will help us navigate the evolving landscape of software creation. You won’t just follow the path; you will help form the patterns of how we use AI and encourage teams across the organization to adopt these transformative workflows.
Come as you are:
At Field Nation, we believe work is about more than checking the right boxes. If you don’t meet 100% of the requirements for this role, but still feel you’d be a good fit, we want to hear from you! We review all applications and may even have another open position where you are the perfect fit.
Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment background check. Your written consent will be obtained prior to a background check being performed.
• Individual Delivery: Lead by example through hands-on development, tackling complex technical challenges and high-priority features. • Shape AI Excellence: Partner with leadership to form the patterns and standards for AI-assisted engineering. You will help bridge the gap between emerging AI capabilities and our daily development workflows. • Drive Adoption: Act as an advocate for modern AI development tools and LLMs. You will encourage and support teams in adopting these tools to improve code quality and architectural consistency. • Target AI-Driven Output: Help develop the processes and skills required to move the organization toward producing more agent-written code through a "human-in-the-loop" model. • Coach Toward a High Bar: Rather than acting as a final gatekeeper, you will coach and mentor engineers to help them define and reach a higher standard of technical rigor. You'll help them understand what "excellent" looks like in an AI-assisted world. • Technical Accountability: Reinforce a culture where human engineers remain fully accountable for the quality, security, and performance of the code they produce, regardless of how much was generated by an AI agent. • Set the Standard: Help define and document engineering best practices, architectural standards, and "definitions of done" to ensure high-quality, scalable code. • Refine Systems: Identify technical debt and architectural bottlenecks, advocating for and leading team level initiatives to modernize systems before they become liabilities.
• Staff-Level Expertise: 8+ years of software development experience with a track record of designing and maintaining complex, large-scale systems. • AI-Forward Mindset: Practical experience using AI coding agents and a strong interest in helping others integrate these tools effectively. • Architectural Wisdom: Deep understanding of distributed systems, database design, and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred). • Deep Technical Breadth: Expertise in full-stack development (PHP, Python, Go, Node.js, React) and cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP). • Collaborative Leadership: Ability to influence technical direction through coaching, mentorship, and advocacy rather than formal authority. • Strategic Communication: Excellence in translating complex technical concepts into actionable guidance for both technical and non-technical stakeholders. • Pragmatic Balance: The ability to switch effectively between high-level pattern-forming and hands-on, individual delivery.
• Unlimited paid time off • Annual vacation bonus - yes, we’ll pay you a bonus to take paid time off! • Individualized growth + development plans • Strong values around work/life balance • Community involvement opportunities • Competitive benefits: medical, dental, vision, paid parental leave + 401K • Exposure to cutting-edge technologies to solve meaningful problems
At Field Nation, we share the value of transparency and enable this during our recruiting process. We believe it’s important to share the compensation range to best understand the full opportunity of a role! We select our initial range based on reliable compensation survey data. Other factors we consider in setting the specific pay for an individual will generally include, among other things, experience, specialized skills, work location, and internal equity to provide competitive offers.
Additionally, every role is eligible for variable pay dependent on the position. As an agile and growing organization, the business needs may change. This may result in us hiring someone with less or more experience than the job description states. If that does happen, we will communicate the updated salary range and the new role to you as a candidate.
The range stated below is a starting point of the compensation conversation, we’d like to hear what your compensation expectations are too!
Base Salary Range | Minnesota or other Zone 3 | $143,000 - 200,000
